Stop Competing on Price: Give Customers a Reason to Choose You
“Can you do it for less?”
Most contractors have heard that question. When customers compare estimates, price is easy to focus on. But lowering your bid every time someone asks can leave you with less profit and fewer resources to deliver quality work.
The goal is to help customers understand what they receive when they hire you and why it matters.
Build trust before the job begins
Your first impression starts with the first phone call, email, or meeting. Returning messages promptly, arriving on time, and listening carefully tell customers how you operate.
Ask about their priorities. Are they concerned about the timeline, staying within budget, or keeping their home clean during construction? Knowing what matters helps you explain how your service addresses their concerns.
Make your estimate easy to understand
A price without explanation invites customers to compare numbers alone. A clear estimate gives them more to evaluate.
Describe the scope of work, materials, included services, and exclusions. Explain payment terms and how changes will be handled. If your proposal includes preparation, cleanup, or other work customers might overlook, point it out.
When a customer mentions a lower bid, invite them to compare what each proposal includes. Stay professional and keep the conversation focused on your own work.
Show evidence of your quality
“Great service” sounds good, but customers need something concrete.
Share photos of completed projects, relevant customer reviews, and examples of similar work. Explain how you handled a challenging project or helped a customer make an informed decision.
For a new business, relevant experience and a thoughtful explanation of your process can help establish confidence while you build your portfolio.
Make communication part of your service
Customers want to know what happens next. Explain who their contact will be, how they will receive updates, and what to expect if schedules change.
Then follow through. A simple update can prevent confusion and show customers that their project has your attention.
Protect the value of your work
You can respect a customer’s budget without automatically discounting your services. When possible, offer options such as different materials, a smaller scope, or completing the work in phases. Explain the tradeoffs clearly so the customer can choose.
Price will always matter. Give customers a clear picture of your workmanship, reliability, and service, and they have stronger reasons to choose your business.
Your estimate gets you considered. The confidence you build helps you get hired.
Give customers a reason to choose you. Before sending your next estimate, ask yourself: Does it clearly explain the value I bring? Highlight your workmanship, outline your process, and show customers what they can expect. Make your next proposal one that builds confidence from the start.
