Ohio Bond Requirements Depend on Your Work and Location

OCILB specialty contractor licensing requires contractor liability insurance, rather than a standard statewide contractor license bond. Do not assume that an electrical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, or hydronics license requires the same bond as a local registration.

Cities and other authorities may require separate license, registration, permit, or right-of-way bonds. Project owners may also require contract bonds. A bond does not replace liability insurance or Ohio workers' compensation coverage.

What Is a Contractor Bond?

A surety bond is an agreement involving the contractor or business purchasing the bond, the authority or party protected by it, and the issuing surety. Its protection and claim conditions depend on the specific bond form.

If the surety pays a valid claim, the contractor and other indemnitors generally must reimburse the surety. A bond is not liability insurance for the contractor.

Local Registration Bonds

May be required to obtain or maintain a city contractor license or registration.

Permit and Right-of-Way Bonds

May be required for excavation, street work, utility connections, or other permitted activities.

Construction Contract Bonds

Apply to a particular project and its bidding, performance, or payment obligations.

How Much Does an Ohio Contractor Bond Cost?

The bond amount is the maximum obligation specified by the bond, not the premium you normally pay to purchase it. Pricing depends on the type of bond, amount, term, underwriting, and applicant qualifications.

A $25,000 bond does not normally require a $25,000 premium. Obtain a quote for your actual requirement; collateral or financial information may be requested for some applications.
