Ohio Permit Office Information

Find resources for building permits, plan review, inspections, and development questions. Ohio Contractor License Center brings official resources together so you can connect with the right office for your next project.

Start With the Project Address

A mailing address does not always identify the permitting jurisdiction. Have the street address, parcel number, project description, and residential or commercial use available when contacting an office.

Ohio building services may be handled by a city, county, township, or the state. The responsible office can differ for residential and commercial construction, and plumbing or other approvals may involve separate agencies.

Start with the Ohio Department of Commerce website and look under Industrial Compliance for Building Department Look Up and Board of Building Standards information. Confirm the project jurisdiction directly before submitting plans or paying fees.

Permits and Contractor Licensing

Licensing and project permits serve different purposes. Ohio's state construction industry licensing program covers commercial electrical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, and hydronics contractors. Confirm any applicable state license, local contractor registration, and project permits with the responsible offices.

Ask About Other Approvals

Depending on the work, ask about zoning, fire review, electrical, plumbing, mechanical permits, grading, right-of-way work, utilities, septic systems, and stormwater approvals. A building permit does not necessarily cover every required approval.

Before You Apply for a Permit

  1. Confirm the jurisdiction. Provide the project address, parcel number, building use, and a brief description of the work.
  2. Ask what the office needs. Confirm applications, plans, supporting documents, contractor credentials, and related approvals.
  3. Review current requirements. Ask about applicable codes, fees, submission methods, and anticipated review times.
  4. Plan for inspections and final approval. Confirm when permits must be issued, how to schedule inspections, and what is needed before occupancy or use.

This is a selected resource list, not a complete directory of all Ohio jurisdictions. Use the state resources above and your local government to find other offices. Always confirm current requirements directly with the agency responsible for your project.
